Other highlights of the morning were an amazing moonset, for which I had forgotten the camera, lots of sky-high snow geese, cranes, being buzzed by a pair of widgeon traveling at least 60 mph before the shooting started, and the previous night's spinach and onion quiche for lunch.
Very nice! Congrats. We've had a good season for bands, one for me and two for the Hunting Partner, including a $100 reward band. Way to go!

ReplyDeleteThanks, and, you guys really have had a good season for bands! I picked up a banded Ross's Goose a few years ago, but this is the first one since then.
Nice job. Do you tie flies?
ReplyDeleteFinspot,
ReplyDeleteThanks!
I do tie, but have a substantial supply of mallard flank. I was looking at those long flank feathers and thinking I should save them, though. To tell the truth, I have a preference for hair wings as they float better. Give me a shout if you'd like some flank feathers or wings for material.
Yep, sometimes one is all you need to have a great day! Taku
ReplyDeleteA banded bird. That is a pretty cool kill.
ReplyDeleteI have to be honest, and tell you that I've never duck or goose hunted before. I play duck, duck, goose when I was a kid, but I'm sure that doesn't count.
I have been reading a ton of waterfowl blogs, though, and I'm thinking I might have to give this style of hunting a go.
Thanks for stopping by, and leaving a comment on my book post. I appreciate it.
Simply Outdoors-
ReplyDeleteI've only been waterfowling (as opposed to occasionally jump shooting ducks) for about nine years and I have a pretty basic outfit. I hunt a small river on foot and have a good decoy bag, waders, a call and a couple of dozen decoys. That basic outfit is enough to get you started and it's a lot of fun, somewhere between calling in turkeys and sitting in a deer blind for activity level.
Good luck with your book hunt! Bodio's Querencia blog on the sidebar also has lots of good book information.
Had the same experience Sunday - one bird, a banded snow goose! Nice when the Duck Hunting Gods smile on us...
